Shifting our attention towards the interiors of both models, both the Bronco and Bronco Sport have some key differences between them. For comparison purposes, we’ve chosen the Bronco 4-Door with the soft top. It’s worth noting that when equipped with the hard top, overall headroom across both rows of seating is slightly reduced. In the front seats, the Bronco has the advantage in terms of both headroom and legroom. Back seat passengers have slightly more room to stretch out in the Bronco Sport. While both offer seating for 5 passengers and very similar passenger volumes, it’s the larger Bronco that has a sizable advantage when it comes to maximum cargo capacity.

Looking next at the exterior measurements of both SUVs, the differences don’t come as much of a surprise. Across all categories, the 4-door Bronco Soft Top is larger than the smaller Bronco Sport. Remember, the Bronco is also available with a 2-door configuration. Bronco 2-door variants share the same vehicle width, front/rear track, and height as the 4-door while offering a shorter wheelbase and nearly 17 fewer inches in overall length.
The smaller Bronco Sport allows Ford to offer a more efficient off-roader that’s also easier to parallel park. In order to save space and weight, the Bronco Sport is built using unibody construction. This construction technique requires that the roof provide some of the structural rigidity needed to take the Bronco Sport off-road. This is why the Bronco Sport isn’t available with a soft top, it needs its roof.
The Bronco uses body-on-frame construction, which doesn’t incorporate body components as a means of providing rigidity. This technique is heavier, but Ford makes up for this (and then some) by offering more powerful engines for the full-size Bronco. This construction also allows Ford to offer removable doors and a soft top for the Bronco. There are quite a few configurations for the roof, and even more are available in the form of official Ford accessories, including things like the Bimini soft top, a mesh top that lets in air while still providing shade.
