- Check the terminals for corrosion, and remove any you find. This is often the sign of a weakening battery, but corrosion will further shorten the life of the battery if left on the terminals.
- Check for loose cables or clamps. Poor connections can shorten the life of batteries and cause other problems on top of that. It’s always best to make sure everything is snug.
- Turn off electrical accessories when not using them. This is especially important when the engine is off, but high drain even while the engine is running can shorten battery life.
- Make a note of the date code on your battery. Batteries last roughly five years, so knowing the date yours was made can give you a general idea of how much life is left in it. This code is usually a number followed by a letter. The number 19 means 2019, for example, and the letter is a month. A is January, B is February, and so on.
- Be aware that extreme temperatures can shorten battery life. There isn’t much you can do about this, apart from parking in a garage whenever possible, but you should know that you might get less life out of your battery if it’s regularly subjected to extremes of heat or cold.
