Upcoming 2018 Ford Mustang Used Duct Tape to help Optimize Aerodynamics
With experts and computers running diagnostics on every aspect of a vehicle, sometimes taking a step back and getting back to basics is the best way to go. With a simple strip of duct tape, the front grille of the 2018 Ford Mustang was redesigned to improve performance and fuel efficiency. Two engineers were testing the Mustang, and didn’t like how it was performing, leading them to some modifications.
While testing, the engineers felt that the Mustang could be handling better than it was, particularly in high-speed cornering, which led to modifications. By applying a strip of duct tape over the lower portion of the grille, they found performance increased and handling felt better. There are now Active grille shutters standard on all non-Performance Pack vehicles, which will completely close off the grille in order to reduce drag at higher speeds. When the air goes over or around the car instead of entering the engine compartment, drag can be considerably reduced.
The Mustang comes with options of up to 460 horsepower, the performance standards are held in high regards. Any extra edge that can be given when travelling at high speeds will be appreciated, which is why these engineers have spent hundreds of hours making tweaks to optimize aerodynamics the best that they can.
