Transmission Service Page - Germain Ford of Beavercreek

One of its most complex components, proper transmission care is essential to the continued operation of your vehicle. While these systems of gears, valves, and computer controls are remarkably robust considering their complexity, they do still require periodic maintenance. Fortunately, the Ford experts at Germain Ford of Beavercreek are here to make sure that you can get that maintenance, and also that it’s done correctly.

Common Signs and Symptoms of a Damaged Transmission

Automatic Transmission Cutaway

Fluid Leaks

Generally the first sign that you have an issue, drops or puddles under your vehicle are usually the sign of a leaking line or gasket. This isn’t always transmission related, but a leak is never a good thing wherever it’s from, and we strongly recommend bringing it in for an inspection whatever it is. Catching a leak early is the best way to prevent catastrophic damage to the transmission.

Park to Drive Delay

Modern automatic transmissions can shift and engage gears very quickly. When you shift from Park into Drive, if you feel hesitation before Drive engages, this is a pretty sure sign that there is a problem with your transmission. The problem will likely get worse if ignored, and if left unchecked, will start to cause the engine to run rough and eventually start to stall.

Gear Slip

This is specifically an automatic transmission issue, and it’s similar to the Park to Drive delay. Once you’re already moving, you might feel the transmission having difficulty shifting while accelerating or decelerating, with engine revs either going higher or lower than is normal. More extreme cases will have the transmission shifting up and down rapidly as it “hunts” for the correct gear, even at a constant speed.

Clutch Slip

This is a problem for manual transmissions, but it should be noted while dual-clutch transmissions are shifted automatically, they still have clutches, and those clutches will still wear out. This is simply the result of normal use, with the friction material on the clutch eventually wearing down the same as it does on brake pads. You’ll feel a disconnect between engine revs and actual vehicle speed. It should be addressed as soon as possible, as this issue is as serious as the others listed here.

Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

Routine Transmission Fluid Changes

Transmission fluid is even more vital than engine oil, as it not only lubricates and keeps components clean, but transmission fluid pressure is actually used to shift gears. Heat and dirt will eventually cause the fluid to break down, which is why Ford includes regular transmission fluid as part of your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. A fluid change consists of our Ford-certified technicians draining the old fluid from the pan, replacing the filter with a new one, and then filling it back up with fresh fluid.

Transmission Service

Transmission Fluid Flush

With a transmission fluid change, about 30% of the old fluid is left in the transmission. This is fine, as transmissions and the fluid are engineered with this in mind. But sometimes there’s a problem and changing all of the fluid becomes necessary. Pressurized fluid in pumped in to force the old fluid out, and the old fluid is run through specialized equipment to check it for signs of transmission damage.

Transmission Fluid Drain

Transmission Reseal

This one is pretty simple, if a fluid leak is detected early enough, the transmission can be resealed to make sure the problem doesn’t get any worse. All of the external gaskets and seals are replaced and upgraded, than the transmission is rechecked to make sure the leak has been stopped, and that there hasn’t been any additional damage.

Transmission Replacement

Transmission Replacement

While it is a rare occurrence, there are times when a transmission can’t be repaired and has to be replaced. Our Ford experts will conduct thorough diagnostics and advise you on the findings. Should be necessary, they will replace the transmission and get you back on the road as quickly as possible.
